Metal-Strong Gas Inflows at the Outskirts of Quasar Host Galaxies

How associated redshifted (infalling) absorption-line systems trace metal-enriched gas at tens of kiloparsecs from a quasar's supermassive black hole. Students learn how multi-ion absorption (Si IV, N V, H I Lyman series) resolved into kinematic components, combined with photoionization modeling, constrains the metallicity, density and distance of the inflowing gas, and how a strong-Si-IV / weak-Lyman signature identifies in situ, stellar-driven metal-strong inflows.
