Microbial Genetics

Microbial genetics is the study of the structure, transmission, and expression of genetic material in bacteria and other microorganisms, encompassing the organization of the bacterial genome (a typically single circular chromosome, often supplemented by extrachromosomal plasmids), the processes of DNA replication, transcription, and translation, and the mechanisms by which mutations arise and are expressed in haploid, rapidly dividing populations. It also covers horizontal gene transfer — the movement of genetic material between microorganisms independent of reproduction — through transformation (uptake of naked DNA), transduction (phage-mediated transfer), and conjugation (direct cell-to-cell transfer via a pilus), each governed by distinct mechanisms and functional constraints. This body of theory belongs to microbiology's treatment of heredity and genetic exchange, providing the conceptual basis for understanding microbial adaptation, genetic diversity, and the spread of traits such as antibiotic resistance within microbial populations.
