Mod-11 Lec-43 Electroweak Theory - 2

Electroweak theory operates under the gauge symmetry group SU(2)L × U(1)Y, where left-handed fermions transform as doublets while right-handed fermions remain singlets with respect to weak isospin. The core theoretical constraint arises because explicit mass terms for both massive fermions and gauge bosons violate this gauge invariance due to the mismatched transformation properties of chiral fields. Consequently, particle masses must be generated through spontaneous symmetry breaking rather than being introduced explicitly into the Lagrangian.
