Modeling the Transformer Equivalent Circuit in Power Systems

Transformer modeling in power systems begins with the idealized transformer — defined by infinite core permeability, zero winding resistance, and zero core loss — from which the fundamental voltage and current turns-ratio relationships (V1/V2 = N1/N2 = a, I1/I2 = N2/N1) and impedance transformation (Z' = a²Z) are derived via Faraday's/Lenz's law and magnetomotive force balance. The physical transformer is then modeled as a deviation from this ideal by adding circuit elements representing finite core permeability (magnetizing reactance), core losses (a shunt resistance/conductance), and winding resistance and leakage flux (series impedance), producing the standard equivalent circuit used for single-phase, three-phase, and three-winding transformers. This belongs to power systems engineering (electrical machine and component modeling), forming a foundational building block for system-level analysis alongside transmission line and generator models.
