Molecular Polarizability

Polarizability measures how readily an applied electric field distorts a molecule's electron cloud to produce an induced dipole; it is a tensor, visualized as an ellipsoid whose axes reflect the molecule's shape. Raman intensity depends on how much this ellipsoid changes as the nuclei move along a vibrational coordinate.
