Navon Figures Reveal Global Precedence in Perception

Navon figures are large letters composed of small letters that may match or conflict with the large one. Participants are typically faster to report the global letter, and a conflicting global letter slows local reports more than the reverse, a pattern called global precedence. The asymmetry shows that perception tends to process overall shape before detail, with the balance shifting with size, spacing and individual differences.
