Nerve Plexus Structure and Functional Purpose in Human Anatomy
Nerve plexuses are anatomical structures in which nerve roots from multiple spinal levels intermingle and redistribute before continuing as peripheral nerves, in contrast to regions where nerve roots supply their target structures directly without such intermixing. The functional purpose of this arrangement is redundancy: because a given muscle or region receives contributions from multiple nerve roots via the plexus, injury to a single root can be functionally compensated by the intact roots, whereas structures supplied directly by a single, non-plexus nerve root lack this compensatory capacity.
