Neutrino Fog Sets the Irreducible Background for Dark-Matter Direct Detection

Coherent elastic neutrino–nucleus scattering from solar ^8B, atmospheric and supernova-relic neutrinos produces recoils indistinguishable from WIMPs; below this 'fog' extra exposure gains sensitivity only slowly. Xenon detectors reported first hints of ^8B recoils in 2024.
