Nyquist–Shannon Sampling Theorem

A signal containing no frequency above B hertz is completely determined by samples taken at a rate greater than 2B; sampling multiplies the signal by an impulse train, which replicates its spectrum at every multiple of the sample rate, and the replicas stay separable only above the Nyquist rate.
