Oral Antidiabetic Agents for Type 2 Diabetes in Pharmacology

Oral antidiabetic agents are drug classes that lower blood glucose in type 2 diabetes mellitus by acting on one of three mechanisms — stimulating pancreatic insulin secretion, suppressing hepatic gluconeogenesis, or enhancing peripheral glucose uptake — and their applicability is bounded by the requirement of residual beta-cell function, which is why they are ineffective in insulin-dependent type 1 diabetes.
