Origin Insertion and Nerve Supply of the Transversus Abdominis in Anatomy

The transversus abdominis is the deepest of the anterolateral abdominal wall muscles, defined by its transverse fiber orientation, its origin from the lower ribs, thoracolumbar fascia, and lateral inguinal ligament, and its insertion via aponeurosis into the linea alba. Together with the external and internal oblique muscles it forms a layered muscular group that functions to move and compress the trunk and support the abdominal viscera, innervated segmentally by the thoracoabdominal (T6–T11) and subcostal (T12) nerves.
