Osteology of the Fibula in Human Anatomy

The fibula is a slender long bone of the lower leg positioned posterolateral to the tibia, connected to it by the interosseous membrane, and structurally divided into a head, neck, shaft, and distal lateral malleolus. This concept belongs to human osteology within gross anatomy, describing the bone's articular surfaces and surface landmarks that define its relationships to adjacent skeletal structures. The fibula's distal expansion, the lateral malleolus, contributes with the tibia's medial malleolus to form the ankle joint articulation with the talus.
