Outcomes and Morphologic Patterns of Acute Inflammation in Pathology

The outcomes and patterns of acute inflammation explain how a short-term inflammatory response can end and what the inflamed tissue looks like. Acute inflammation has only three outcomes: complete resolution, healing with a scar, or progression to chronic inflammation. Pathologists use the four fluid patterns (serous, fibrinous, purulent, ulcerative) to describe what they see, and a short list of chemical mediators explains how the response is driven.
