Pathophysiology and Treatment of Iron Deficiency Anemia in Hematology
Iron deficiency anemia is a microcytic, hypochromic anemia arising from an imbalance between iron intake/absorption and iron demand/loss, impairing hemoglobin synthesis and thereby reducing the oxygen-carrying capacity of red blood cells. This is a principle of hematology, situated within the physiology of iron metabolism (dietary absorption, storage via ferritin, and transport via transferrin) and its pathological disruption by decreased intake, decreased absorption, increased demand, or increased loss.
