An event-triggered scheme for backstepping boundary control of the Aw-Rascle-Zhang traffic PDEs in which control updates fire only when a Lyapunov functional threatens to cross a time-varying performance barrier, instead of whenever strict decrease would be violated. Because the barrier tolerates temporary Lyapunov increase, the variable-speed-limit command changes far less often than under regular event-triggered control while still guaranteeing Zeno-free, exponentially convergent stabilization of stop-and-go oscillations; periodic and self-triggered variants avoid continuous monitoring of the trigger.
