Phototoxicity

Light-induced damage to living specimens, driven mainly by excited fluorophores transferring energy to molecular oxygen and generating reactive oxygen species that oxidize lipids and proteins. It scales with peak intensity and total dose, so it is often worse for high-power point scanning than for spread-out parallel illumination at equal photon count.
