Physical Signs of Inhalant Use in Youth

Inhalants are common products that people breathe in to get a quick high. Examples are glue, paint thinner, spray paint, markers, gasoline, and spray cans like whipped cream or computer dusters. Young teens and children use them most, because the products are cheap and easy to find. Look for a chemical smell on the breath or clothes. You may see paint or stains on the face, hands, or sleeves. There may be a rash or sores around the nose and mouth. The person may look dazed or drunk, slur their words, or seem dizzy. Headaches, an upset stomach, and a runny nose are common. You may find empty spray cans, or rags and bags that smell of chemicals. Inhalants can be deadly. They can make the heart stop, even the first time someone uses them. A person can also choke or run out of air. If someone is very sleepy, confused, or not responding, call emergency services. Stay calm and keep them calm. Other things can explain these signs. Paint on the hands can come from art class or a job. A rash near the nose can come from a cold or chapped skin. Write down what you saw and smelled. After this Concept you can recognize the signs of inhalant use in a young person and know when it is an emergency.
