Ploidy and DNA Content Notation (N and C) in Cell Biology

Ploidy notation (N) and DNA content notation (C) are complementary but distinct quantitative descriptors in cell biology: N denotes the number of unique (haploid) chromosome sets an organism's cells contain, while C denotes the amount of DNA characteristic of one haploid genome, and these two values can change independently of one another across the cell cycle. A cell's ploidy (N) remains constant through DNA replication because no new unique chromosomes or homologous sets are gained, whereas its DNA content (C) doubles because each chromosome is duplicated into a linked pair of sister chromatids. This distinction belongs to the domain of cell biology / genetics, clarifying the relationship between chromatin, chromosomes, homologous chromosomes, and the cell cycle by resolving a common terminological ambiguity around what "chromosome number" means during and after replication.
