A single diffraction-limited laser spot is raster-scanned across the field by mirrors and the emission from each dwell position passes a single pinhole onto a point detector, building the image pixel by pixel. It gives the cleanest sectioning and free choice of scan geometry, at the cost of slow frame rates and high peak illumination intensity.
