Posner Cueing Shows Covert Attention Shifts Before the Eyes Move
In the Posner cueing task a cue indicates a likely target location shortly before the target appears. Valid cues speed detection and invalid cues slow it, even when participants keep their eyes fixed, demonstrating covert shifts of attention. Comparing peripheral (exogenous) and central (endogenous) cues separates reflexive capture from voluntary orienting, and long cue delays reveal inhibition of return.
