Posterior Mediastinum in Thoracic Anatomy

In thoracic anatomy, the posterior mediastinum is one of the subdivisions of the thoracic cavity's mediastinum, defined as the region posterior to the pericardium and housing the esophagus and (per some classification schemes) the primary bronchi. The mediastinum as a whole is divided into superior and inferior compartments by a plane from the sternal angle to the T4–T5 vertebral level, with the inferior mediastinum further subdivided into anterior, middle (defined by the heart and pericardium), and posterior regions based on structures' position relative to the heart.
