Primary Skin Lesion Terminology in Dermatology

Primary skin lesion terminology classifies dermatologic findings along two axes: whether a lesion is palpable (flat/macular vs. elevated) and whether it is solid or fluid-filled, with size thresholds distinguishing related terms within each category. This standardized vocabulary (macule, patch, papule, plaque, nodule, tumor, vesicle, pustule, bulla, erosion, ulcer) forms the descriptive foundation of dermatology, used to characterize and communicate the morphology of skin conditions independent of diagnosis.
