Principal Stresses from Combined Axial Torsional and Bending Loads in Mechanics of Materials
In mechanics of materials, when a structural member is subjected to combined loading (axial force with bending, axial force with torsion, or bending with torsion), the resulting normal and shear stresses at a point are found by superposing the stresses computed independently for each load case from established single-load formulas (σ = P/A for axial force, σ = My/I for bending, τ = VQ/(Ib) for transverse shear, τ = Tρ/J for torsion), then combining the resulting normal and shear stress components at that point via Mohr's circle or the stress-transformation equations to obtain the principal stresses and maximum shear stress. This extends the general theory of plane stress transformation to practical member design under multi-mode loading.
