A proof-of-work block is never absolutely final; the probability that an attacker's hidden chain overtakes it decays exponentially with each confirmation, modeled as a biased random walk between honest and attacker chains. 'Six confirmations' is a convention about acceptable reversal risk, not a protocol guarantee.
