Driving a purified protein out of solution into an ordered lattice by slowly raising supersaturation with precipitant, salt, or pH changes. Nucleation requires higher supersaturation than growth, so the ideal trajectory nucleates briefly in the labile zone and then drifts into the metastable zone where existing nuclei grow large and well ordered.
