Design, construction, and beam-test validation of a two-part plastic-scintillator trigger detector read out by silicon photomultipliers for the PSI muon electric-dipole-moment experiment: a thin gate detector operated in anticoincidence with a four-layer telescope selects muons on trajectories optimal for stable solenoid storage and fast-triggers a pulsed magnetic kicker. A proof-of-principle run at the PSI piE1 beamline with 27.5 MeV/c muons measured timing, light yield, and triggering efficiency in excellent agreement with a Geant4 optical-photon Monte Carlo, confirming the design meets the experiment's requirements.
