Quantum Decoherence

Interaction with an environment entangles a system with uncontrolled degrees of freedom; tracing the environment out leaves a reduced density matrix whose off-diagonal terms decay, destroying interference and making the system look classical. It is the central engineering enemy of quantum computers.
