Raman Selection Rules

A vibration is Raman-active only if the derivative of the polarizability with respect to the normal coordinate is nonzero at equilibrium, which by symmetry means the mode must transform like a quadratic function (x^2, xy, ...) in the molecule's point group. The specific rule for a harmonic oscillator additionally restricts fundamental transitions to a change of one vibrational quantum.
