Recovery Position
The recovery position is a stable, side-lying posture for an unresponsive person who is breathing normally, keeping the airway open and letting fluids or vomit drain rather than block the throat. Extend the near arm, bring the far arm across the chest, bend the far knee, and roll the person toward you onto their side with the head tilted slightly back and the top knee preventing rolling. It is used after successful resuscitation, in suspected poisoning or intoxication, and after a seizure ends. Anyone unresponsive enough to need the recovery position needs emergency services called and their breathing rechecked continuously until help arrives.
