The rescue tube is the lifeguard's primary rescue device: a buoyant foam tube with a tow line and shoulder strap that supports both rescuer and victim in the water. On stand, the tube is held ready with the strap donned and slack line controlled so the guard can enter the water without delay. During a rescue, the tube is placed between the rescuer and the victim, giving the victim something to hold that is not the rescuer's body — the core margin of safety in every approach. The tube also supports the victim during towing and assists flotation during extrication and in-water care. Skill with the tube must be automatic before approach techniques are practiced.
