Rule of Mutual Exclusion

In a molecule with a centre of inversion, every vibration is either IR-active or Raman-active but never both, because the dipole operator is ungerade and the polarizability operator is gerade. Observing a band in both spectra is therefore direct evidence that the molecule is not centrosymmetric.
