Sampling Rate and the Nyquist Limit

The first irreversible decision in digitising a voice. The Nyquist limit — half the sampling rate — is the hard ceiling on what frequencies can be represented at all, and it decides whether the higher formants a voice study reports were ever recoverable from the file.
