Seizure First Aid

First aid for a convulsive seizure is protective, not restraining: ease the person to the ground, clear away hard or sharp objects, cushion the head, loosen tight clothing at the neck, and time the seizure. Never hold the person down and never put anything in their mouth. When jerking stops, roll them into the recovery position and stay with them as they reorient, which can take several minutes. Call emergency services if the seizure lasts more than five minutes, repeats, occurs in water, involves injury or difficulty breathing afterward, or if it is the person's first known seizure.
