Self-Paced Reading Measures Sentence Processing Difficulty Word by Word
In self-paced reading a sentence is presented one word or phrase at a time, each revealed by a key press, and the time spent on each segment is recorded. Longer reading times at a word indicate processing difficulty there, such as recovery from a garden-path misparse or integration of an unexpected word. The method locates comprehension difficulty within a sentence without eye tracking equipment.
