The loading element at the end of a list requests the next slice and replaces itself with the new items plus a fresh sentinel, so spent sentinels never pile up and the last response simply omits one. A learner afterwards can write the sentinel markup and the partial it swaps in, and explain why innerHTML would leave the trigger behind.
