Semantic Priming: Related Meanings Speed Word Recognition
In a semantic priming experiment a prime word precedes a target in a lexical decision or naming task. Targets preceded by semantically related primes are recognised faster than targets preceded by unrelated primes. The facilitation is attributed to spreading activation among related concepts and to expectancy, and it shrinks as the interval between prime and target grows.
