Signs of Drug Use in Teenagers versus Normal Teen Behavior

Teens change a lot, and most of that change is healthy. They want more privacy. Their moods swing. They try new friends, new clothes, and new music. None of this alone points to drug use. A warning pattern looks different. Several changes come at once, and they come fast. Grades drop sharply. Old friends are dropped for a new group the teen keeps secret. Money or pills go missing at home. You may smell smoke or alcohol, or see red eyes and heavy use of eye drops or mints. A vape can look like a pen or a USB stick, so a small device is easy to miss. The teen may lose interest in sports or hobbies they loved. Keep in mind that sadness, bullying, a breakup, or trouble at home can cause these same changes. So compare the teen to their own past self, not to other teens. Write down what changed and when. Then talk with the teen in a calm, private way, and bring in a trusted adult when it is safe to do so. After this Concept you can tell normal teen change apart from a pattern that calls for a closer, caring look.
