The protocol destroys part of a validator's bonded stake and ejects it when it signs provably contradictory messages, such as two blocks in one slot or two conflicting attestations. Slashing converts equivocation from a free strategy into one with direct, attributable cost, closing the nothing-at-stake loophole.
