Snow Cover Insulates Soil and Roots Against Deep Winter Frost
Fresh snow is mostly trapped air: 20–30 cm can hold the soil surface near 0 to −3 °C while air drops below −25 °C. Shovelling clean snow onto perennial and garlic beds extends that protection; bare cold snaps freeze deepest.
