The complete set of symmetry operations — rotations, screw axes, translations — that map a crystal lattice onto itself; 65 of the 230 space groups are chiral and therefore allowed for proteins. The space group fixes which reflections are systematically absent and how much of the unit cell is the unique asymmetric unit.
