Spatially Resolved Hot-Cold Gas Scaling Relations in M51

An observational study linking the X-ray-emitting hot interstellar medium to cold molecular gas and star formation in the Whirlpool galaxy on kiloparsec scales, using deep Chandra imaging with archival millimeter surveys. The hot gas surface brightness falls sharply inside the central 2 kpc, and the diffuse 0.5-2 keV gas luminosity follows twofold correlations against total infrared luminosity and against CO(1-0), CO(2-1), HCN(1-0) and HCO+(1-0) line luminosities - steep in the center, shallow in the disk. Core-collapse supernovae are identified as the dominant central heating source, with X-ray radiation efficiency rising with star formation rate surface density.
