Spin-Spin Coupling
The spin state of one nucleus perturbs the field felt by a neighbor through the bonding electrons (scalar/J coupling), splitting its signal into a multiplet. Coupling is mutual, transmitted through bonds not space, and normally observable over 2-3 bonds for 1H-1H.
