Staphylococcal Scalded Skin Syndrome in Dermatology
Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome is a toxin-mediated (as opposed to immune-mediated) epidermal disease, representing a generalized form of bullous impetigo, in which systemically absorbed exfoliative toxin binds desmoglein-1 in the epidermis and causes intraepidermal lysis, producing thin-walled, fragile bullae/vesicles. As a toxin-mediated mechanism rather than an autoimmune or infectious-invasion process, it is mechanistically distinguished from immune-mediated blistering diseases (e.g., Stevens-Johnson syndrome, bullous pemphigoid, pemphigus vulgaris) within dermatology, notably by its tendency to spare mucosal surfaces and its self-limited course.
