Staphylococcus Virulence Factors and Disease in Microbiology
Staphylococcus aureus is a gram-positive coccus (grouped in grape-like clusters) that colonizes the skin and mucous membranes of many humans as normal flora but can cause disease—focal abscesses, toxin-mediated syndromes, and cellulitis—when host barriers are breached. Its pathogenicity depends on a set of virulence factors (capsule, peptidoglycan, protein A, catalase, coagulase, pore-forming toxins, exfoliative toxins, and superantigens such as TSST-1) that enable immune evasion, tissue damage, and toxin-mediated disease, within the domain of bacterial pathogenesis in microbiology.
