Surface Anatomy of the Abdomen in Human Anatomy

This concept covers the surface anatomy of the abdomen within human anatomy, defining palpable bony and soft-tissue landmarks (xiphoid process, costal cartilages, pubic crest/symphysis, inguinal ligament, umbilicus, linea alba, semilunar lines, anterior superior iliac spine) that establish reference planes (midclavicular, subcostal, transtubercular) dividing the abdomen into nine anatomical regions. The theoretical significance lies in using these external landmarks and regions to localize underlying viscera and in understanding dermatomal sensory innervation, whereby visceral pain is referred to corresponding cutaneous regions because the central nervous system is more accustomed to interpreting somatic (skin) sensation than visceral sensation.
