Ten or More Earthworms per Cubic Foot Signals Biologically Active Garden Soil
Dig a 30 × 30 × 30 cm block in spring or autumn when soil is moist, break it apart and count worms: about 10 or more is a common extension benchmark for healthy soil. Very few worms in an acid (below pH 5), compacted or bare bed points to the cause.
