The cell cycle and cell fate explain how tissue grows back after injury, and why some tissues regenerate fast while others never do. A cell can only do three things: divide (proliferate), specialize (differentiate), or die by apoptosis. Regeneration replaces lost cells, healing undoes the damage from necrosis or inflammation, and how quickly a tissue regenerates depends on how fast its cells normally turn over.
