The Emergence of Quantum Field Theory from Classical Fields, Relativity, and Quantum Mechanics

This concept, in theoretical/particle physics, explains how quantum field theory (QFT) emerges as the union of classical field theory, special relativity, and quantum mechanics — a unified framework in which fields, rather than fixed particle positions, carry momentum density and support wave-particle interactions. It is motivated historically by the Schrodinger equation's inability to explain spontaneous emission (an unstimulated quantum transition to a lower energy state), which requires quantizing the electromagnetic field itself at every point in space rather than treating it classically. QFT branches into quantum electrodynamics (QED, the relativistic quantum theory of electromagnetic interactions between charged particles) and quantum chromodynamics (QCD, the theory of the strong interaction between quarks mediated by gluons).
