The Eriksen Flanker Task Isolates Response Conflict from Distractors
In the Eriksen flanker task a central target is surrounded by distractors that are either congruent (calling for the same response) or incongruent (calling for the opposite one). Responses are slower and less accurate on incongruent trials even though the flankers are irrelevant, showing that distractors are processed to the level of response activation. The congruency effect is a standard measure of response conflict and inhibitory control.
