Acute inflammation is the body's fast, non-specific protective response to injury, and it follows a fixed order of vascular, cellular, and chemical events. Blood vessels widen and leak, neutrophils (white blood cells) move to the site, and then they engulf and kill the cause. The response ends in one of three ways: full recovery, a scar (fibrosis), or chronic inflammation, and the cell type seen under the microscope tells acute from chronic.
